 Las Vegas Based Small, Minority Businesses Partner to Champion State Bid
Washington State Department of Health Selects Sumnu Marketing and MYS Project & Brand Management to Spearhead Youth Marijuana Prevention Campaign

LAS VEGAS, NV – On October 19, The Washington State Department of Health (DOH) awarded Sumnu Marketing and MYS Project & Brand Management (MYS) competitive bid, Tailored Youth Marijuana Prevention: African American Youth Marketing Campaign, which intends to positively shift attitudes and behaviors around the non-use of Marijuana among African American youth.

While the DOH’s pilot program aims to prevent illegal marijuana usage among all 12 to 20-year-olds in Washington State, this award focuses on the sub-set of youth with the highest-risk for early usage. Per a DOH needs assessment report dated January 2010, African American youth, ages 10 to 19 make up approximately 4% of the estimated 11% youth of the entire state population in the same age group sampling and represent the highest rate of marijuana use in 10th grade among ethnic groups at 29%.

A Grass Roots Engagement Plan (GREP) was proposed to support a partnership between the Department of Health and trusted youth organizations within the African American community to establish open, comfortable communication with the target youth population. The proposed GREP will gather vital demographic data through stakeholder meetings, focus groups and youth charities to be used in crafting an online engagement initiative inclusive of social media and online platforms where youth are able to seek reliable and accurate education about the effects of marijuana from trained professionals.
